What Is Laser Cutting & Engraving?

Laser cutting, laser engraving and custom laser etching are digital making methods available in our 3D Hub.

Laser cutting is a subtractive manufacturing technology that uses a high-power laser beam to cut flat-sheet materials. A computer directs this laser to follow the cutting line in your digital design. The high-precision laser vaporizes a cut line through the material, leaving a 90-degree high-quality cut-edge finish.

Laser engraving is similar, but instead of using the laser beam to cut through the material sheet, it engraves the material surface. Following the engraving line or area in your digital design, the laser vaporizes a thin layer of the material surface, exposing what lies beneath and leaving a burn mark that varies in intensity from slight with acrylic to more pronounced on more combustible materials like wood.

LASER PROCESSING ADVANTAGES

1

Mark/Print Anything

Virtually any 2D design and file type can be printed from your design software. Including Adobe® Illustrator®, Adobe® Photoshop®, AutoCAD®, SOLIDWORKS®, DraftSight® and many others. Additionally, .DXF and .PDF file formats can be imported into the Universal Control Panel (UPC).

2

Fast Processing Time

We can cut, engrave and mark in one step. Additionally, we can engrave or mark a high-resolution image onto your material. Because our laser systems can perform many different types of operations in a single step we can process your part faster than other service providers.

3

Process just about any material

An endless number of materials are compatible with our laser system, including plastics, metals, silicone rubbers, fabrics, composites, laminating adhesives and other advanced materials to name a few.
